In astrology, the signs are perhaps the most well-known aspects of the practice, garnering attention in newspapers and pop culture. Just about everyone knows what their sun sign is, regardless of the other important placements in their natal horoscope.

Here is an overview of each sign, from my perspective as an observer, having only the soul of a Pisces, but the benefit of either knowing or having known souls belonging to each sign of the Zodiac.

Note that I refer to the Signs and Planets as having a sense of self and identity. This is essential to truly grasping archetypal relationships in astrology.

Aries ♈︎ (Ram)
March 21 – April 19

AriesRam2.jpg

Aries is a fire sign, ruled by the planet Mars. Aries are known for their courage and passionate ability to tackle anything head on. Although they are full of zeal when they get stirred up, Aries is not the best with following through once the excitement wears off.

Aries are also the sign with the shortest tempers. They tend to be easily triggered, especially when they feel like their pride has been insulted. Aries has a natural connection to the 1st house, the house of self.

This also means that Aries tend to be athletic and in good physical shape, because the 1st house rules the physical body in addition to the outward projection of the personality. They see their bodies like sports cars, so they want to make sure that they have something worth showing off…something that runs well.

Aries make for natural born leaders once they humble themselves and take the ego down a notch, which can be a herculean task for some Aries. Everyone needs that one person to rally around, but no one will rally around a person who doesn’t make others feel valued. Aries can become the pinnacle of leadership given plenty of time to mature in love.

Taurus ♉︎ (Bull)
April 20 – May 20

TaurusBull.jpg

Taurus represents the creature comforts of life, the things we hold dear…our treasures. Like a crow collecting shiny trinkets for its nest. Taurus is ruled by Venus, and she’s all about enjoying security and comfort in life.

To the extreme, this can manifest as a possessive, jealous lover, but at heart, the Taurus only ever behaves that way because they truly do know how to love in a deep, steady way.

The second sign of the zodiac has a natural association with the 2nd house, and this manifests in the energy of personal possession and personal values. Taurus has been known to be stubborn, like the common phrase, “bull-headed.” This no-budge mentality is deeply rooted in Taurus’ commitment to their values, beliefs, and ideals.

Once a Taurus has decided to do something or believe something, there’s not much wiggle room. However, Taurus has the staying power that their Aries cousins lack, and this stubbornness can be channelled into determination and perseverance.

Gemini ♊︎ (Twins)
May 21 – June 20

GeminiTwins.jpg

“Did you hear about Lisa? She got fired yesterday! Ooooohhhh! Did you know that Jerry Garrington dropped out of high school?” Yes, Gemini’s can be gossips, but that’s because they just love information.

Gemini is the sign that collects and distributes information as a natural part of their innate being. It’s just something that motivates their existence. Ruled by Mercury, the messenger of the Gods, Geminis are designed to communicate.

The awesome thing about Gemini is that they are always the ones in the know. If you need a connection or an answer, Geminis either have the connection, know the answer, or can find the person who does!

Being the natural 3rd house sign, Geminis rule short journeys (commutes), neighborhoods, and the people you meet along your usual route. Gemini is the sign of community. There’s something beautiful about that Gemini wholesomeness and their way of spreading the word.

Cancer ♋︎ (Crab)
June 21 – July 22

CancerCrab.jpg

They really aren’t usually crabby people. To the contrary, Cancer is the friend-group mother of the Zodiac, but remember, they are only going to take care of you if they really care about you and let you into their guarded world. This belies a connection to the 4th house, which represents the childhood home: where you grew up and who reared you.

Having the moon as their ruler, Cancer is understandably associated with emotions, mothers, and the tide (which comes and goes). This does not make Cancers wimpy. They have claws, and they know how to use them if necessary! I’m not sure why they’ve been stereotyped as weak due to their caring nature. Possibly as part of social misogyny that deems anything emotional as feminine, and thus weak? Could be.

Cancer, like the other water signs, are incredibly intuitive. One of my best friends (Hey Andrew!) is a Cancer, and he’s also an amazing medium, intuitive, and angel/tarot/oracle card reader. Cancers have the luminous type of intuition that beams from their souls, just as the moon reflects the light of the sun. This makes them truly gifted mystics.

Leo ♌︎ (Lion)
July 23 – August 22

LeoLion.jpg

Leo seeks acknowledgment, it’s their love language. They want to be applauded for who they are and what they do. Leo teaches us how to courageously step forward and put ourselves out into the world for the sake of bringing our gifts and talents to others.

Leo is ruled by the Sun, so that means that the Light of Spirit is the true spot light for Leo to be bathed in, and the acknowledgement they seek should stem from the connection they make with others on a deep soul level by allowing their brilliant light to shine.

The 5th house is the natural chart placement of Leo, and it speaks to themes such as romance, creativity, and children. This inner child and carefree expression of who they are is the highest expression of Leo traits.

Yes, Leos can be a bit too self-involved, but that’s because they innately know that they are royalty. Leo is the sign of kings and queens. It represents the tender compassionate rulership of the rightful rulers of the throne. For Leo, the question is, “What kind of ruler is sitting on the throne of your heart?” The answer will reveal the nature of Leo’s desire for recognition and validation.

Virgo ♍︎ (Virgin)
August 23 – September 22

VirgoVirgin.jpg

Undefiled, pristine, organized, healthy, clean, immaculate, are all words associated with Virgo. So are critical, skeptical, ruthless, unforgiving, and mundane. Virgo represents the naive unbeliever and the skilled artisan of scientific healing arts. Being the physician of the Zodiac comes with a lot of pressure.

Virgos are hard on others, but they are even harder on themselves. There is an inner critic that exceeds the critical voice of other signs. This voice demands complete and total perfection, and nothing less. Virgo, traditionally ruled by Mercury, represents the extreme organizational and multitasking aspects of the project manager for the divine plan manifested through the zodiacal cycle.

Virgo corresponds to the 6th house in natural charts, and 6th house themes refer to health, day-to-day work, and the environments in which we spend the most time. Virgo’s big lesson is to “Go with the flow and trust the process.” Life isn’t perfect. In fact, life is pretty messy most of the time.

In order for Virgos to connect with their souls they require one tiny thing: faith. Even the smallest portion of faith in what they cannot see has the ability to super-charge Virgo’s life. Once they tap into this energy they can become some of the most powerful people imaginable.

Libra ♎︎ (Scales of Balance)
September 23 – October 22

LibraScales.jpg

Balance, justice, fairness, beauty, discrimination, and appreciation are all excellent descriptions of Libras and their unique soul expression. I’ve known quite a few Libras, and they are all marked with an energy of classic beauty. One Libra I know is a dancer, and he also graduated with a degree in theatre.

The arts belong to Libras, and they truly understand how to appreciate and create beauty in the world. Having Venus as their ruling planet, Libras are the epitome of gracefulness. They have a certain refined aura that makes them stand out from the crowd.

Libra corresponds to the 7th house of the horary wheel, and this is the house of partnerships. If Aries is I, then Libra is We. However, it’s important to remember that Libras demand that partnerships remain the combined effort of two individuals instead of the merging and dissolving of the personalities.

In order to grow in this life, Libras must learn to stop judging everything, because sometimes there is no clear answer. Whether or not they realize it, they are not as capable of judging and discerning as they would like to believe. Their sense of judgement stems from their own perceptions of value instead of the objective judgement that no human is possible of maintaining.

Libras must also learn to channel their passion into things that do not interest them. Otherwise, they may simply lie around all day and not get anything done. If you want a beautiful environment, then you must do the work to make it so. It’s all about balance.

Scorpio ♏︎ (Scorpion and Phoenix)
October 23 – November 21

ScorpioScorpion.jpg

One might wonder why Scorpio, represented by the Scorpion and the Phoenix is a water sign, but upon further investigation it becomes clear that they are the most intensely emotional sign of the zodiac.

Scorpios would never want anyone to discover their emotional sensitivity, because above all they fear being exposed as vulnerable. This is why they have armor. Their emotions are sacred to them, and they will protect their inner world at all costs. This is also why Scorpios sometimes get a bad wrap. They aren’t evil. Really.

Scorpios simply have a distinct type of inner strength and intensity that no other sign truly understands. Pluto is the ruler of Scorpio, and if you look back through history you’ll discover that Pluto’s journey through the signs brings about incredible (and sometimes painful) transformations in the world. This also corresponds to the 8th house: the house of intimacy, transformation, regeneration, sex, secrets, and inheritance.

The primary lesson for Scorpios is to learn to let their guard down and allow themselves to be vulnerable to others. By becoming vulnerable and learning to merge with others on an intimate, mystical level their own souls are transformed.

Scorpios are the natural detectives among their fellow Zodiac brothers and sisters, but what they must learn to do is stop investigating others and begin doing personal investigation into the crevices of their own psyche. What they discover within themselves has the power to change the world for good. If they do not do this inner work the power can manifest in less pleasant ways.

Sagittarius ♐︎ (Centaur, Archer)
November 22 – December 21

SagittariusCentaur.jpg

Do you like to party? Are you on a long journey, seeking philosophical truth? If so, then you might be a Sagittarius! This fire sign is full of passion for life! In fact, Sagittarius sees life as one grand, epic adventure, and they are determined to have a great time while they’re here.

“Eat, drink, and be merry, because tomorrow we die!” That sums up the life perspective of Sagittarius. Ruled by Jupiter and placed in the 9th house of wisdom and higher mind realizations, Sagittarians are known for their unexpected deep wisdom and understanding. At a party, they are certainly the most fun to be around…at least until they start drinking too much and begin arguing with everyone for the sake of arguing.

You see, Sagittarians don’t really care all that much about what you believe, but they will start an argument with you just to see how much you care about what you believe. If you pass their test, then they will be your friend for life. If they piss you off, then they’ll probably buy you another drink and think you’re boring for giving into their game too easily.

That’s the hardest lesson for Sagittarius to learn: not everyone else is playing a game all the time. In fact, sometimes people are downright serious, and they want you to be serious with them. Sagittarius has the bad habit of being too casual and nonchalant when situations call for maturity.

However, the evolved Sagittarius soul has the ability to channel their deep wisdom in such a way as to give everyone the dose of understanding and meaning for life that they need. It’s all about learning what to say and when to say it.

Oh yeah, and the stereotype about Sagittarius sleeping around and being wild…all true (at least for many of these centaurs). They love freedom. At least tell them that you don’t care if they do whatever they want. Deeply, Sagittarians are committed to their personal truths, and they will not violate their own code of ethics.

Yet, if they feel trapped they may grow resentful, regardless of whether or not this manifests as unfaithfulness or other forms of rebellion. So, it’s important to give them the freedom to choose in their minds, and they’ll respect you for this, deepening their commitment to you.

Capricorn ♑︎ (Sea Goat)
December 22 – January 21

CapricornGoat.jpg

Persist. Achieve. Win all the trophies. Make straight A’s. Show up on time, and always be early, never late. Capricorns are the Chief Executive Officers of the Zodiac. If there’s work to be done, you can bet that Capricorns will the ones who get everything done, and they are shrewd business people.

Being the opposite of Cancer, they can seem aloof and uncaring, and this is actually due to their primary purpose in life: Capricorns are designed to achieve status and success in the material world. Unfortunately they will do so to the exclusion of creating strong emotional bonds with others.

Ruled by Saturn, and governing the 10th house of authority, Capricorns are all business. They truly have a difficult time relaxing and having a good time. They could stand to learn from their Sagittarian neighbors about letting their hair down, but imagine a world without any structure or boundaries or authority?

Depending on your sign you might be quick to declare such a world a better place, but Capricorns keep anarchy at bay with their relentless emphasis on regulations.

However, Capricorns must learn the limits of their ability to achieve and rule in life. Ultimately, we all end up in the grave, and like the saying goes, “There are no U-hauls following you to heaven.”

Aquarius ♒︎ (The Water Bearer)
January 22 – February 21

AquariusWater.jpg

“I get by with a little help from my friends!” Ahhhhh…Aquarius. There’s no other sign that can inspire us to believe in the dream than our airy, insightful friends. Aquarians are never boring.

They have this eccentric, cutting edge personality that lifts us all into a higher realm of thought and understanding. Aquarians are like from a different world, a place far more advanced than where we currently exist.

Uranus is the sign ruler of Aquarius, and he represents change for the sake of change, rebellion against the established order, breakthroughs, and genius. The energy of Uranus fits nicely with Aquarian themes, and also with the 11th house of society, friendships, and organizations.

Aquarius is the radical hippy liberal of the Zodiac family, you know, like your older cousin who moved to California to get high on the beach and feed the homeless. Aquarians are the humanitarians and social workers. They are always focused on what could be, and they fantasize about their utopian social order.

The big lesson for Aquarians is to learn to accept the things that are and learn to connect to the heart space of humanity instead of only living in their own minds. Intellectualism and brilliant insights are great, but without the heart the mind fall short more often than not.

Pisces ♓︎ (Two Fish)
February 22 – March 20

PiscesFish2.jpg

As a Pisces, I could write an entire essay on the sign, so I’ll resist. Pisces are co-ruled by Jupiter and Neptune, and they are the spiritual servants of humanity. Pisces are genuinely dedicated to unconditional love when they are operating on their highest level. Pisces will give and give and give until one day they realize that they don’t have anything left.

Perhaps the most sensitive sign, Pisces embodies 12th house issues: dissolving, unconscious, true spirituality, divine oneness with all. Pisces are two fish bound by a single cord. One fish represents Neptune’s watery nature and the other represents Jupiter’s supreme wisdom and expansion.

Unfortunately, Pisces are easily wounded. Unlike the other two water signs, Cancer and Scorpio, Pisces neither have a shell or a means of defense against predators. Their true power lies in their incredible intuition and ability to sense danger. This is a blessing and a curse. In order for Pisces to be truly free, they must learn to have faith instead of clinging to fear.

Pisces are intrinsically gifted with the ability to always slip through the difficulties of life. Even when there seems to be no hope, if Pisces can tune into their faith and simply trust, there will always be a way of escape for these sensitive, loving souls.

Yet, Pisces must guard against using worldly means to escape: drugs, alcohol, and other mind numbing tools. Meditation and trance inducing practices come naturally to Pisces, and if they learn to escape by turning inward to their rich spiritual world they will become the Christ-like Messiahs they were born to be.

  1. I love it! It’s so beautifully written and full of emotion and knowing. You are a true fish: compassionate, intuitive, and so in-tune with the vibrations around you. I love seeing you blossom into your gifts. Thank you for sharing this. I feel your soul and you love for exploration and understanding. Your gifts are amazing.
